Feile 2011 (24th to 26th of June 2011) turned out to be a very wet but very successful weekend for the club.

On Friday with the pitch and grounds looking in excellent condition the girls welcomed Raharney from Westmeath to the club at 12.15pm and the lads welcomed Drom and Inch from Tipperary at 1.30pm. The visiting teams were welcomed with tea and sandwiches in the clubhouse before the games. At 2pm the girls played Raharney and lost out despite an excellent effort. This Match was followed by the Lads who recorded an excellent victory over the Tipperary champions on a scoreline of 4-5 to 2-5. Following the games all the players, mentors and families of both teams were fed with spaghetti, bolognese chicken curry, tea and drinks before they headed off to the parade in Loughrea. Despite the rain still falling the parade ran off very well to a big crowd on the streets of Loughrea. Castlegar Juveniles with their new banner scooped the best banner award of the 104 teams in the parade.

On Saturday the girls played in Castlegar  while the lads travelled to Turloughmore to play their games. The girls played Liam Mellows and Causeway (Kerry) in what turned out to be two very tough and close games. Unfortunately despite putting in a great effort the girls lost out and Liam Mellows topped our group going through to the semi-finals. The lads first game was at 10am against the Wexford Champions Taghmon/Camross. Despite a slow start the lads upped their game in the second half and were unlucky only to draw the game on a score line of Cashel 7pts Tahgmon/Camross 1-4.

The second game against Turloughmore at 12.15pm turned out to be a great game despite the weather. Cashel were on top for most of the game and eventually ran out winners by 3pts. Despite not losing any game in the group the lads had to enter a play-off against Taghmon/Camross to decide who qualified for the semi-finals. This was decided on a 5 minute a side game which the Wexford champions won out by 3 points. Despite not qualifying the lads can be very proud of their achievements over the weekend. This was the first time all year the management team have had a full panel to select from and they were excellent. It was brilliant to see a large crowd of Cashel supporters in Castlegar on the Friday and Turloughmore on the Saturday to support the teams. Well done to both teams on excellent performances.

After the games on Saturday all 4 camogie teams were fed as were the Cashel lads and Drom and Inch. A Disco was organised for the Saturday night in the Complex which by all accounts got the Teams mixing well.

Thanks to Fr. Martin who organised a mass especially for the Feile teams at 9.30am on Sunday morning. The Lads and Girls were then “handed” back to their home clubs and thankfully all went home safe.

We would like to thank all the hosting Families who gave up their Homes and time so freely over the weekend. Special thanks to all the Parents who brought Food to the Complex on the Friday and Saturday.

Thanks also to everyone who helped to get the grounds in brilliant condition and to everyone else who helped out over the weekend.

Special thanks to our Feile officer Pat O’Brien who ensured that all the games ran smoothly over the weekend. Thanks also to Ronan McNulty who was the Clubs Steward for the Parade in Loughrea.

The biggest thanks must go to the brilliant Ladies Committee who were on hand from 9am on Friday morning helping to set up and prepare for the arrival of the teams, for organising and serving the food on the Friday and for cleaning up and preparing it all again for the Saturday where over the two days over 600 people were fed. Some of these ladies worked from 9am to 7pm on the Friday and Saturday and returned to help with the disco.

Once again well done to both teams on their participation in Feile and to the Management of both teams for the work they have done with them over the last few months.

There are loads of pictures of the feile weekend on our facebook page Castlegar GAA. Thanks to Trevor for all the pictures.
